About Nidus

Nidus is a non-profit charitable organization that was founded by groups involved in the community-based reform of B.C.’s adult guardianship legislation, and most notably, development of the BC Representation Agreement Act (“RA Act”). The RA Act is world-renowned and recognized as innovative and significant, especially to the disability and senior communities. The RA Act inspired Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which calls on governments to implement legislation that ensures all adults receive support with decision making without the need to take away or restrict their rights (as happens with adult guardianship, called Committeeship in BC).

We provide education, support, and assistance to British Columbians with personal planning for the purpose of: enabling people with disabilities who need immediate help or support with decision-making due to questions about cognitive or mental capability, to use Representation Agreements as an accessible, cost-effective, and least intrusive legal alternative to adult guardianship (and loss of rights) and imposed authority; and enabling people who want to plan for the future to use Representation Agreements and, if desired or needed, Enduring Powers of Attorney, in the event of mental incapacity due to disability caused by injury or illness.

Nidus is the only community-based resource in Canada devoted to personal planning. Its existence sets British Columbia apart as a leader in addressing the critical needs of an aging population. The Resource Centre also operates a centralized Registry, called the Nidus Registry for personal planning documents and other important information and documents in case of a health crisis or other emergency.
